Australia is one of the most popular countries among migrants. It has a number of migration programs. The Migration Program is designed to meet Australia's economic and social needs. The total program places are broken down into planning levels for each stream of the program and visa category. The planning level for the 2014-15 Migration Program is set at 190,000 places.
- 128,550 places for skilled migrants including employer sponsored migrants, general skilled migrants and business migrants
- 60,885 places for family migrants who are sponsored by family members
- 565 places for special eligibility migrants, who include former permanent residents and have maintained close business, cultural or personal ties with Australia
- The skill stream comprises around 68 per cent of the program, while the family stream comprises 32 per cent.
Among all these streams, the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program is the most popular one. The General Skilled Migration (GSM) visas are subject to a points test assessment. The points test is a transparent and objective method of selecting skilled migrants with the skills and attributes needed in Australia. The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship has the power to set the pass and pool marks for the points test.
